Maury County Judicial Building Courthouse project

Innovative Audio-Visual Solutions in Maury County’s New Courthouse

In the heart of Tennessee, Maury County faced a challenge common to many growing communities: their century-old courthouse could no longer meet the demands of a rapidly expanding population. What followed was an ambitious project to create a modern judicial facility while honoring the rich history of the county. At the center of this technological transformation was S&L Integrated, whose expertise in audio-visual solutions helped bridge the gap between tradition and innovation.

The Challenge: Growth Demands Change

“We got to a point where our over 100-year-old courthouse was no longer sufficient for our needs,” explains Douglas Chapman, one of the judges serving Maury County, Tennessee. With the state experiencing significant expansion, county officials recognized the need for a facility that could accommodate multiple courtrooms, meeting spaces, and modern technological requirements.

The new courthouse would need to house three courtrooms downstairs and three to four rooms upstairs, along with dedicated spaces for attorney-client meetings. But the vision extended beyond mere capacity— it needed to enhance the experience for everyone from the person walking in off the street to the legal professionals working there daily.

A Collaborative Approach

James Kennon from the Architect Workshop credits much of the project’s success to the county’s decision to establish a steering committee. “The county set up what they called the steering committee, which included county officials that were using the building. They brought their own personal input and their vision of what the building needed to be for them to do their jobs,” Kennon notes.

This collaborative approach ensured that the courthouse design addressed the practical needs of those who would use it daily. The committee worked with architects for months during development. These complex and varied requirements extended beyond architectural design to technological implementation, requiring specialized expertise.

Honoring History While Embracing Technology

Despite the focus on modernization, preserving Maury County’s heritage remained paramount. “History was really important,” Kennon explains. “We wanted to find ways to bring that history into the new courthouse.”

The solution came from the county archives—a series of historical photographs that now line the courthouse meeting rooms, backlit to showcase the county’s legacy within the new building. This thoughtful integration of historical elements creates a sense of continuity between past and present.

Designing for Multiple Needs

A key challenge in the courthouse design was accommodating different court functions within the same facility. The general sessions, circuit, and chancery courts each have unique requirements.

“The attorney tables range anywhere from having four of them to having two, depending on which court is in session,” Chapman explains. Similarly, jury boxes vary in configuration—some position jurors on the side facing the witness, while family court places them directly in front of the judge.

These varied configurations demanded not just architectural ingenuity but advanced audio-visual systems that could adapt to each courtroom’s unique layout and purpose.

The S&L Integrated Solution

When it came to implementing advanced audio-visual capabilities, S&L Integrated stepped in as the expert partner. “We are not AV experts,” acknowledged project leader Meredith Bardill. “S&L came in and worked with us to find a solution.”

The comprehensive audio-visual system installed by S&L Integrated includes:

  • Strategic microphone placement throughout courtrooms
  • High-fidelity audio systems ensuring clear communication throughout each courtroom
  • Video feed capabilities with multiple camera inputs
  • Zoom integration for remote proceedings
  • Centralized control systems for ease of use

One of the most anticipated features was the sophisticated video system. Chapman explains, “The integrated video capabilities were one of the features we were most excited about. With our multiple camera setup, media representatives no longer have to compete for position to capture important moments—everyone can access a clear view of the proceedings.”

The Impact: Efficiency Meets Tradition

The new audio-visual systems allow the courts to function more efficiently while maintaining the decorum expected in a judicial setting. Remote proceedings, which became essential during recent years, can now be conducted seamlessly with professional-quality audio and video.

“Taking some of what we’re used to being able to do and making it better and more efficient, but still having ease of use—that’s what I’m looking forward to the most,” Chapman shares.

Seamless Implementation

Despite the complexity of the systems being installed, the implementation process was remarkably smooth. As Bardill describes it, “S&L was quarterbacking it the whole time. We just kind of had eyes and ears on it, but it felt very seamless.”

This behind-the-scenes efficiency allowed the courthouse transition to proceed without disrupting the important judicial work of Maury County.

Looking Forward

Today, the Maury County Courthouse stands as a testament to thoughtful design and technological integration. It honors the county’s past while equipping its judicial system for the future. With S&L Integrated’s audio-visual solutions at its core, the courthouse delivers an enhanced experience for everyone who walks through its doors—from citizens seeking services to the judges, attorneys, and staff who work there daily.

The project demonstrates how the right expertise, applied with sensitivity to both tradition and future needs, can transform a community cornerstone for generations to come.
