Customer Story
New AV System Brings Flexibility and Innovation to Tall Timbers’ Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center
Tall Timbers Research Station | Tallahassee, Fla.
The client, Tall Timbers Research Station in Tallahassee, Florida, commissioned a full‑building AV system design for the new Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center. This state‑of‑the‑art facility was built to serve as a fully functional education and event center, supporting board meetings, research conferences, educational programs, and community events, including weddings and banquets. At the heart of the design is a large, 3‑way divisible conference room that can operate as three independent rooms or one unified event space, with the AV system engineered from the ground up to support these flexible configurations. S&L Integrated designed and installed a comprehensive, integrated audio, video, and control solution tailored to the entire building’s needs.
system requirements
Because the Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center was designed from the ground up, its AV system could be purpose-built to complement the facility’s architecture, workflows, and long-term vision as a multi-use education and event center. The design needed to accommodate flexible room configurations, professional presentations, hybrid meetings, and public events—all while remaining intuitive for staff, researchers, and outside renters alike. From the divisible conference room and private offices to meeting rooms, corridors, and outdoor gathering areas, each space demanded tailored AV coverage that still functions as a single, cohesive system.

The Solution
Divisible conference room core
A large, 3‑way divisible space was designed with permanent AV pathways, including a 98″ display in each room, wireless presentation “pucks,” lecterns, gooseneck microphones, and touch panels, enabling independent or combined operation.
Centralized video routing matrix
All three rooms plus a 136″ DVLED wall in combined mode share a routing matrix that allows any source (Bring-your-own-device, Room PC, document camera) to be displayed on any screen.
Flexible video conferencing and collaboration
Each room supports HDMI and USB‑based video conferencing, with ceiling‑mounted beamforming microphones and PTZ cameras for remote participants, while the combined room uses the nearest lectern as the main control point.
Office AV stations
Three offices are equipped with displays and all‑in‑one video collaboration bars (USB camera/mic) plus wall‑plate HDMI and USB connections, enabling everyday meetings and remote collaboration.
Smaller meeting rooms
Additional meeting rooms throughout the building feature displays and video conferencing capabilities, all integrated into the same control and routing backbone.
Hallway and outdoor displays
Three hallway displays outside the conference room can show room‑based video, event feeds, or digital signage, with two HDMI inputs in the equipment rack for client‑supplied content.
Distributed audio and outdoor zones
Ceiling speakers in hallways plus outdoor entrance and rear‑patio areas provide background music and announcements, controlled via touch panels in the equipment room or the multipurpose room during events.
Bluetooth background music and assistive listening
A Bluetooth wall plate at the combined‑mode lectern enables campus‑wide background music with independent volume control, while an assistive listening system ensures accessibility for all guests.
The Solution
S&L Integrated delivered a full‑building AV solution purpose‑built for the Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center, with the divisible conference room at its core and AV coverage extended to offices, meeting rooms, hallways, and outdoor spaces. The system integrates video conferencing, wireless presentation, digital signage, and distributed audio into a single, easy‑to‑use platform. The design emphasizes intuitive touch‑panel control, clear audio/video, and scalable infrastructure so the center can support board meetings, educational conferences, weddings, banquets, and future technology upgrades.
The Result
The new‑build AV design transformed the Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center into a fully functional, multi‑use facility. Staff and researchers now have a reliable, intuitive environment for board meetings, educational conferences, and hybrid events, while renting for special occasions such as weddings and banquets is streamlined with pre‑configured audio, video, and display options. The divisible conference room, hallway displays, and outdoor zones work together seamlessly, creating a cohesive experience for on‑site and remote participants. Because the system was built with purpose around the building’s architecture, future technology upgrades—such as expanded streaming, additional collaboration rooms, or updated signage—can be integrated smoothly into the existing infrastructure.
